The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa is the law of the country. It sets out the rights and duties of its citizens, and defines the structure of the government. The Constitution of South Africa was first introduced to the public in 1995, and has since been the subject of many constitutional challenges.

The most important change made to the Constitution in 1996 was the introduction of the Interim Constitution. This was a temporary measure, intended to give the government some time to prepare for the presidential elections, which were then coming up quickly. The temporary measure was introduced by the then-president, Nelson Mandela, and approved by the country’s parliament, the National Assembly.
